12 Cuban Instants

Peter Riley

Sleeping in La Habana

Fan gently whirring
little gusts of air on my face
cockerels at three
diesel explosion
dogs
all the work to be done.

On the road

Whatever you do don't hit a cow. You can be imprisoned
                        for that.
The vultures don't matter but they're pretty solid
and can do a lot of damage to the radiator.

Neighbourhood

Left alone in the car for an hour I
talk through a half-open window to
two young boys who ask for various things
then smile and say OK and get on with their baseball game.
