PHOTOGRAPH

today I received an old card
from a distant country
a picture of Erbalunga

I had never heard that name
I don't know where it is
and I don't wish to know

Erbalunga

yesterday I received
mother's photograph
saved from 1944

in the photograph
mother is still young beautiful
smiling faintly

but on the reverse
I read words written
in her own hand
'1944 terrible for me'
