Night Journey on the PlainRoads make their ancient scratch marks on the chalk,
fade into dusk,
wind down to secret villages
hidden in trees
steeped in soft wells of shadow,
gather under wings of darkness and the owl's cry
remotest farmsteads, byres and cottages;
nothing is seen
except by the mind's eye,
