TO A MUCH-TRAVELLED FRIEND

You, in your metropolitan attire,
Tamer of cities, lover
Of sidewalks at night in bizarre
Cafés, the curious rover,

Diner-out at hidden restaurants
With select acquaintance
In Europe's capitals, piquant
Raconteur, each nuance

Of your night-long eloquence
Giving the moment
A tone of consequence -
You are magnificent.

A dilettante, unsystematic,
You bathe in limpid air,
Gliding through Europe with aquatic
