LA CHEVAUCHEE DES ROIS MAGES
(Dijon: Ecole Suisse, c. 1460)

Small pearl of paint, the star
keeps to its corner in
a sky transfigured gold.

No wonder three kings left
their silken girls and made
this journey; it was not
one star that led them (as
we have imagined, to
keep faith with nature) but
a golden heaven spun
by a child from straw.
                     This
primitive sky provides
no light and shade, admits
no doubt, no terror to
taint the epiphany
