Poetries
We take it that the earliest
Was that of bard, guslar, goshan,
Who sang of heroes, which was best,
The craftiest, most outrageous man,
(Or just the one who killed the most),
Who mocked the wimps and nobodies,
And dealt in blood, and loved to boast
Of booty filched from enemies;
While ancient Eros seems intent
On juvenile androgyny
With or without coerced consent –
Boys, girls, The Greek Anthology.
Brutal aggression, child-abuse –
We don’t approve of either, do we?
Was ‘poetry’, then, just an excuse?
