I Wake Up

I wake up every morning thinking of you
And your family, bringing joy & hope
Where before there was sadness & despair
Thinking of the great battles of our time
To give everyone a fair shot, a fair shot
That’s all we’re asking for, all anyone
Is asking for, an end to dreams deferred.

Our better angels put our demons to bed
On eagles’ wings, in the palm of God’s hand
The moral arc of a story is bent to justice
Blazes across night sky in fiery healing
Standing on shoulders of the generations
Of women & men believing in possibility
Addressing the most difficult questions

In good faith that history has posed for us
