I.
In the Beginning was the Worm.

In the Beginning was the Verb.



Spring Among the Fallen

The weather took hold, pollen
skimming the windows
with a handful of saffron.

The neighbor’s ornamental
burst into miniature fireworks,
its once-a-year holiday.

Not all endings were recalled.
The temporary music
was heard in absence, racket

and squall of the dawn chorus,
the chill of late-departed winter
a loss disguised as piety.
