from ‘Ungovernable Bodies’

A bedroom is not a bedroom unless it has
a means of egress, say the rules for sellers.
After the larks have sung, our Romeo must
have a system for leaving safely and secretly.

It is only after marrying that our lovers find,
at one tragic finish, one another in a tomb.
A bedroom is not a bedroom unless it has
a means of egress, say the rules for buyers.

Outside my room in Queens, a fire escape
for lovers who found their way to my bed.
Staring at its black, complicated extensions,

I wrote my earliest American poems about
freedom and happiness, misery and desire,
the night train frothing on the nearby track.
