A Postcard from Alexandria 1908

The hands clasped
At the base of the spine,
A black hat on the head,
Head and shoulders only
A shadow that clung to a wall
Beyond the lamppost
Where a young man hesitates,
A young man under a straw hat
About to cross the clean
Pale yellow sunlit street
Where horses stand, coaches wait -
Above all, in this suspense
And bath of Alexandrian colour,
Look on again, at the man
Of medium height, walking
