SPRING POEM

for Jeremy Trafford

If you are by nature green,
enjoying a tendency
to bear foliage, you may
now be well pleased with yourself.

Narcissus poeticus,
local even in cities,
be especially joyful.
Even a determined grouch -
one for whom piles of dead leaves
are the ultimate turn-on -
acknowledges your being
with a twinge of gratitude.

Dominant in our woodlands,
Endymion nonscriptus,
