For Jaccottet

Kit Hanafin
Light and Astonishment

A figure descends from the massif
to stand with its shadow
lengthening at its feet
on the revolving stage of the plain
the matinée is about to finish
the world turns, the prompter turns
a page in his copy of the script
the chestnut trees grow darker,
subtracting other players
from the drama which ends
with a breath slowly exhaled,
at night the same figure
walks in the garden and waits
for the sound of the same breath
