Close Watch

Although the low down
And your daughter sleep
In leafier neighbourhoods,
I’m not shadeless, awake
In an apartment block’s
Canopied top slice.

You’re by my side, a slight
Flutter, wind in the blinds.
And like the last utterance
Of one in pain, but calmed
By looks and felt meaning,
The ventilated syllables
Depart, leak lightly out,

Driven as high-end cars
Are driven towards lots.
