1. Bald Eagle

The judge has retired
To the tallest lodgepole.
We await his rebuke.


2. Porcupine

What's black and white
And dead all over?

Just enough traffic on this highway
To ensure you never made it back

To the sett behind the slough.
But close up, you don't make sense.

Down on my knees I discover
A baby smiling under a warbonnet.


3. Nodding Donkeys

All day the drill-rigs genuflect
To the gods of distances;

And at night on the plain
